Networking problem #2
After listening to advice from you guys last week, I managed to upgrade the P1 machine from Win95 to Win98 and they now have good connection. Thank you.Since I am going to set up a network of about 7-8 machines, and I need to do the following work. Please advice me on an economic and stable way.
1. Link up 7-8 computers with OS being WIn 98, Win ME, Win XP and share files, printing and broadband.
2. A total of 3 printers will be used. I need to make them network printers so that every machine can throw print jobs to each of the machines.
3. Share one broadband internet line among these machines.
How many LAN cards (1 or 2?) should I need for each machine?
Do we have printer server combo router (for not more than 8 machines, probably wired and not wireless) for such use? Any suggestion? I know that 8 machines may reduce the bandwidth shared. But that is still acceptable as not all machines would simultaneously download materials.
Must the printers be dedicated network printers if I use printer server?

每部電腦1張lan卡
1部router
1個hub/switch (如7部電腦需用8 port,8-10部可以視乎router有多少port提供﹐而用8port hub/switch)
方法:
boardband modom 接router wan位(需事前設定router的上網設定eg. PPPoE的login id, password)﹐LAN 位接hub/switch 或電腦)
而每部電腦的LAN線全部接hub/swithc 或router LAN位。
而printer按平常的方法安裝﹐然後按右mouse 分享出來便ok。
要share的file﹐則在電腦上開一個folder再按右mouse 分享出來便ok。
有一點要注意﹐win xp安裝sp2後﹐tcp/ip只有10個connetion﹐即同一時間只可有10部電腦連接。 kei_hk在 2005-8-28 10:02 PM 發表:

要用唔同既printer就有可能要著唔同電腦...
printer呢度我建議用printer server好似好o的(e.g hpo的jet direct)...

資本夠粗的話買一個 HP JetDirect 500x 來用也不錯。不過
500x 係提供 Parallel Port，如果 Printer 是用 USB 的就不行了。

不是10 個連線, 是10個半開啟的連線 (Attemp to connect).

I am confining the no. of computers to less than 10. Probably not more than 8.
all printers use parallel port, so it should be ok.
Only 98 and XP computers will be used.

I have a netvigator broadband account. do i still need to install the dial up program in the Win 98 machines?
how much would it be if i buy a printer server for 3 printers and a router with 8 wired connections as suggested? Please suggest me some models.

不不不，不是說這個。
你說的限制連線僅對 TCP/IP 起作用，我所說的是
無論用任何 Protocol (e.g. Netbeui, IPX) ，Windows 2000 Pro/Windows XP
僅容許最多十個 Client 連線 (區域連線，如 File Share / Printer Share)。
