http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_mortality_rate
It has been noted that the infant mortality rate of the US is among the highest in developed countries, on a par with countries such as Croatia, New Caledonia and Cuba.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy
The figures for death rate and life expectancy are just as gloom.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/01/28/infrastructure.report.card/index.html?iref=newssearch
Infrastructure in the United States are aging, rusty and poorly maintained. They received a cumulative ranking of D given by the American Association of Civil Engineers.

http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/state-page/california
In particular, roads, drinking water and mass transit are key concerns in California. Notably, 30% of California's bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. 66% of its major roads are in poor or mediocre condition. 59% of high hazardous dams have no emergency action plans.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/13/school.stimulus/index.html?iref=newssearch
And then there is this bunch of GOP market-economy extremists who don't care a bit about the worsening conditions of schools, infrastructure and so on. The school reported here suffered 'walls peeling off, water leaking through the roof and debris falling off from the ceiling', and that some classes had to be 'taught on trailers', perhaps making it even worse than schools in Sichuan, China after last year's earthquake.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_income_equality
The US has one of the highest Gini indices among developed countries (though Hong Kong is even worse in this respect), comparable to Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela. It is easy to see beggars everywhere around.

These being said, I still prefer living in the US to Hong Kong, mainly because the US society is far less monolithic than its HK counterpart, and because it has a much better academic atmosphere and respect for human knowledge.
