Canada: OC Transpo ADL Enviro 500 in Ottawa
First of all, just want to say it's a pleasure to be a member on this discussion forum! This is indeed the first post that I have made on HKiTalk, hopefully some of you might find these photos interesting and pleasurable for viewing! In the beginning of this month, I spent two weeks travelling around the east coast of Canada. I specifically chose to visit Ottawa, having my fingers crossed for weeks even before I made the trip, as I was hoping to ride and photograph all three Enviro 500 double deckers that are currently undergoing a two-years-trial period with Ottawa-Carleton Regional Transit Commission, or much more well-known as "OC Transpo". One of the most interesting features about the OC Transpo Enviro 500s is the openable windows, along with standard North American style transit seats, which are both uncommon features of Enviro 500s currently running in North America.I wasn't disappointed in the end, as I managed to find all 3 buses over my 3-days-visit with relatively little efforts! Let's allow my photos to tell the rest of my story.

1202, this is the only one out of all 3 double decker buses to keep the original ADL rim covers!

Craving for more photos? Please be my guest and check out the rest of my collection on my website!
I also recorded two videos onboard bus 1202 and 1203 respectively, just in case some of you may be interested to go for a fun little ride with me =)
In this video recorded onboard 1202, you will be joining me for a 9 minutes ride along the unique Ottawa Transitway from Hurdman Station to Greensboro Station along route 97X to South Keys! Don't miss out if you would like to experience some high-speed Enviro 500 actions!

Thanks for reading my first post on HKiTalk, hopefully the materials are as exciting and enjoyable as you have been expecting to see!
Cheers,
Dave How many ADL Trident E500 in here:) I probably go there in 2011 or 2012 on my Nth America Enviro trip via Seattle, SF, are they hard to be spotted? Very enjoyable video. Here are my comments and questions:
(1) Is the bus stop announcement made real-time by the driver?
(2) What is the red canopy structure in each station? It seems that this structure connects to the other side of the road through a tunnel or a bridge. Am I right?
(3) The overhead clearnace is very very tight as I can see when the bus passes through bridges.
(4) Do you know the maximum speed of the bus in your 9-minute video? Did it reach over 80 km/h?
Thanks.

They aren't difficult to find at all, because they are always assigned to the same routes and runs everyday! (ie: They will always appear at the same places at the same times, running for the same assignments). However, according to OC Transpo's current plan..........despite of the fact that OC actually purchased these 3 Enviro500s, they will only be operated in service in Ottawa for 2 years, as OC's "long term" feasibility study about double decker operations in Ottawa. These double deckers were delivered to OC in November 2008, but didn't get to see service until March 2009 due to the transit strike in between. If OC's plan is true, these 3 Enviro500s will be withdrawn from service by March 2011 at the latest. What happens after that? Nobody knows.........and really, OC might simply end up keeping these buses instead of selling them off, just as what happened to the O-Train 2-years pilot program started in 2001, it's still in full operations today! I personally can't see OC Transpo placing future orders for Enviro500s, not anytime soon for the least, because they just made a deal with New Flyer by trading in the existing fleet of New Flyer D60LFs manufactured between 2001-2004 in exchange for a discount on 306 New Flyer articulated diesel buses (D60LFRs), scheduled for delivery by the end of 2010!

1.) Yup, that's correct
2.) It's an overpass walkway for passengers trying to cross from one side of the station to the other........think of the transitway stations as train stations, except for buses are operated instead of trains. There's absolutely no chance for passengers to wander away from the platform, nevermind about jay-walking across the transitway!
3.) Indeed
4.) The maximum speed along certain sections of the transitway can reach up to 90km/h. As far as I know, there aren't any speed-locking devices.

1.) All 3 buses were delivered in November 2008, entered service in March 2009. The delay in between was caused by a transit strike.
2.) Imported from UK. At this point, only Enviro500s ordered by US transit agencies are built by Eldorado in California, due to the "buy America" compliance.
This color scheme is meant to emphasize on the theme of "Canadian-ness".....after all, it's the capital city of Canada!

Yup, 94, 95, 96 and 97 are the major routes using articulated buses. Enviro 500s are used on route 35, 61 and 77 during peak hours.
Sorry about the lengthy essay, hopefully I did adequately answer all of the questions posed by everyone! :loveliness:
Thanks for reading!
Cheers,
