Mostly correct, but the Tea Party has indeed been able to garner support from the poor whites in the southeast (especially in states like Texas); look at the mid-term election results.
Thanks to the Republican propaganda machine known as Fox News (aka Faux News:lol) and radio talk hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck who routinely disseminate false information to the public, quite a lot of people believe in things like "Obama is a radical Muslim born in Kenya", "only the private sector can generate meaningful jobs" and "global warming is the greatest hoax on earth". Over the past two years, the Tea Party propaganda has been particularly capable of falsely tying every single social and economic issue to jobs. For example:
- Why not support universal healthcare? "Because it kills jobs!"
- Why not support food safety? "Because it kills jobs!"
- Why not support cap and trade? "Because it kills jobs!!"
- Why not regulate air pollutant emissions? "Because it kills jobs!!"
Absent the ability to think critically and differentiate between good and bad information, those blue-collar, poorly educated workers who listen to this kind of propaganda every day naturally believe in every single thing that the Republicans say - that Democrats conspire to destroy the greatest country on earth - and end up voting against their own interests in the elections. Of course, now that the GOP has secured a majority in the House of Representatives, they are not concerned about jobs anymore but are concerned with things like destroying Obama's earlier victories, notably the healthcare reform (even though I, for one, don't approve of that because it's not liberal enough) despite the fact that maintaing the status quo would add something like $230 billion to the deficit in 10 years.:(
Of course, in west coast states like California and Washington, the situation is different. In California, for example, the mid-term elections outcome was in stark contrast to the national trend - almost every Republican with a major position was unseated. Most poor people and Latinos here indeed support Democrats. Of course, the Republican propaganda machines are tying the support for Democrats to the demise of California and are saying that we people are nuts. Some are proposing that the University of California should be dismantled to save money:@ - of course for their own benefit because the state would lose a key driver behind much of the successful liberal agenda over the years.
No, budget airlines are very strong in Florida - Southwest, Airtran and Jetblue all have substantial operations in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.
