For CI... It could be more economical to operate A350 compare to B787... As CI already operate A330/A340 which share a lot of similarity with A350 which could help CI to reduce operational cost... But for B787, CI would require to train their cockpit crew to operate the type which would be more costly... Also less flexible for the crew as if CI buy A350, their cockpit crew could operate any A330/A340/A350... Which means more flexibility when they need to change aircraft for any reason and able to reduce delay due to any change of aircraft... But the issue now is to decide either 747-800 or A350. As CI operates both 747-400 and A330/340 models, I think it is down to the demand of what CI's routes needs and the future development of the fleet.
