Harddisk dead, anyway I can recover the data?

My Hitachi 40GB 5400 rpm laptop harddisk had gone out of order yesterday.
Windows cannot be loaded up, only BIOS can be reached.
I have tried to use another computer to try to recover the data, but
it can't be reconginised....

Is there any other way i can recover my data back?
I have heard that there are some companies that can do this kind of recovering job,
do anyone know how much it would cost around?

Moreover, how much is a 40GB 5400 rpm laptop harddisk at the moment?

I've reached a site of a data recovery company (which is located in TW).
It stated that the recovery fee of a single harddisk is ranged between NT$ 10K - 30K+ (Around HK$ 2.4K-7.3K)

Please evaluate if it is worth to pay several thousand dollars and take back your data.

講明先，有關公司的收費可以有好多分別的，平ge都要你2000大元。(一般都救到最少6-7成左右)

如果想好d的話，ibas係一個唔錯的choice。當然價錢就呵呵……

如果出便有公司話千元以下可以搞掂的話，咪信！
因為要救harddisk係需要係無塵室內進行的。

之不過，如果你的data係好緊要的話，呢D少錢就好少意思啦。

一間專業公司去救harddisk的話，佢會係無塵室內將整個harddisk拆散，然後用專用的機器去進行surface scan。
(只要有微弱的磁粉singal的話，佢都可以讀到ge；係無塵室內進行有關作業的原因，其實係為o左保障雙方利益，
以免係HD拆散過程中受任何雜質污染)

係將raw data完全讀入後，之後就係將raw data重新組成整個file system出黎。
係成個process之中，有關公司會將個process記錄低，然後report俾個客知。一些專業的公司更可能提供DVD/CD
recovery output(將救到的data燒落media內)，以便客人安全地進行有關recovery，如果唔係就要自己prepare media去
回收有關data。

而其他media的做法都係同救harddisk的過程大同小異：以 low level scan出其raw data，然後做rebuilt 。

所以各位如果要出街搞data salvage的話，價位上一定唔可能平過1.5k的。(根據自身過往經驗)
我亦都因為過往慘痛的lessons，我係重要data處理的要求上的precautions會做得非常嚴格，包括自行加上parity(CRC32、MD5果類)。
每個月定期以CD/DVD backup的代價係貴，但總比出事後salvage平一大節。
(雖則tape係比DVD/CD更好，不過因為錢的問題而無法使用。)

This is actually the model of my dead harddisk...

AT the moment, there is one company here saying that they may be able to
recover the data of my harddisk, charging me at least 125 pounds.

The worst thing is that the data that I haven't yet to back up is only from last September
to this January, but there are so many photos that are very vulable...
I would have to discuss with my father and see....

To be honest, I personally would think anything below $2500 in order to obtain
my data back would be acceptable.

How much for ibas?

My harddisk was about 95% storage used out of 40GB.

Also, for example, can I only want them to recover just part of the data?
e.g. I only want the data newly stored on the harddisk from last August to this
January (As other data I have backed up already)

Also, would it be better if I send it back to the producer of the harddisk, in this case, Hitachi?
How much would it cost me?

hkbw兄，希望你唔好介意我combine你兩篇reply黎回。

125 GBP約為1722港紙，呢個水位我認為個provider都應有一定水準；不過你就一定要問埋點攞返走D data啦。(以我經驗，呢個水位只會要你自行拿走data)

如果你找得果D公司的話，佢會問你邊D data你最想救到先的，不過最後都係會將成隻disk的data全部攞得幾多就攞盡架啦。

至於ibas的話，價錢又的確可以嚇死人的。
(ibas係data recovery行內極之有名的公司之一，用佢的話要有荷包的覺悟先好……
只係檢查就已經收你450 USD[3K HKD]，其他野就當然另計……)

[我以前做過果間公司隻野出事之時搵o左佢fix野，果wok係嚴重撞擊，最終回收到9成幾，收成十幾K]

Anyway, 你一定要查清楚佢的：
1. the qualification and originality of the engineer
2. the real experience on HDD repair and data recovery
3. the perfect understanding about the structure and operation of HDD
4. the total understanding about the structure and operation of using OS
5. the understanding and operation about using system
6. the use of HDD utilities and software for recovery
7. the clean room equipment for the process of data recovery
先好send隻disk俾recovery公司。
因為以前的確有部份不良公司係得個樣架咋，好似老作resume、亂搞一通、價格過低咁。
事實上我未聽過有平價公司可以handle到一隻經嚴重災難disk的。

如果你攞返去原廠搞的話，多數都只係useless的。因為佢只會將佢當作RMA處理，data方面就當然好少理啦。
講白D即係你俾返廠就連渣都冇……

如果唔太放心的話，建議你上有名的hardware forum問一吓有關問題，通常佢地會俾到D有用ADVICE的。
