It is on Rt 592 (London - Aberdeen) run by Trathens. The Neoplan is a brand new one (same as Megabus' Neoplan) only delivered last month.
Trathens' drivers have a bad driving behaviour and I had many of these dangerous experience when I was a regular traveller on Rt. 501 two years ago, This is what i read on the Trathens-Travel- Services yahoo group.
"A Trathen's Neoplan Skyliner operating the 2230pm London Aberdeen NX 590 service,over- turned last night at 2345pm on the slip road from the M4 onto the M25.The news reports said that two out of the 65 passengers had died, and five passengers were injured, some had lost limbs.
This service is operated by Park's but use a Trathen's vehicle, from the news reports,it was one of the new Neoplan Skyliners. The drivers will have taken over the 0830am London Blackpool 570 service yesteday at about 1330pm at Charnock Richard services on the M6,they take the coach up to Blackpool and work the 1500pm service back down to London, they then change coaches and take the coach which works the mid after noon service from Plymouth to London.
The drivers change at Glasgow and hand the coach to a feeder driver, who takes it to Aberdeen, and then works the 1150am Aberdeed Manchester airport 538 service back,at Glasgow a Trathen's Rochdale driver gets on,and at Hamilton, the Park's driver will leave the coach, and the Trathen's driver works the service to Manchester airport. The coach stays overnight in
Rochdale, and then works the early Rochdale London 540 service, and then works the 1330pm service back to the
west country.
About 4 years ago a passenger died when they fell from a Trathen's double decker on the overnight 590 service heading south, just near Tebay services but the passenger was drunk, and opened the entrance door while the coach was moving.

In that case that should be one of those that was delivered in October then.
I did actually got a ride on this very vehicle late in that month whilst traveling
back from Heathrow to Preston late at night.
RIP to those who lost their lives.
Update: NatEx has confirmed that it has ordered the 12 Skyliners (presumably
all Thrathens vehicles) to be withdrawn from service for safety inspections.

Richard Bowker (MD of National Express) was interviewed and said that all (12?) of the Trathens'
Skyliners have now been taken out of service until the cause of the accident as been established.
No doubt any recommendations coming from Neoplan will be heeded by Stagecoach - in the interim "safety first" will no doubt be uppermost in the minds of Oxford Tube and Megabus drivers. |
