The WHY is the class code of London Central's Wright Electrocitys, the first batch of hybrid (diesel electric) powered buses bought for operation in London. These buses have a 1.9 litre turbocharged diesel engine from General Motors, powering a battery pack located at the back of the vehicle. Unfortunately, when they were introduced in 2006, they were hopelessly unreliable, in fact it would be lucky to see two available (out of 6) for service at any one day. The batch were subsequently returned to Wrightbus for further work on their cooling system, which was the root of all the problems they have been suffering. In any case, the solution never work as satisfactorily and future builds of Electrocitys will have a massive cooling pack mounted at the roof of the back of the bus.
