"Autumn" seems to have its origin in Latin:
French: automne
Italian: autunno
Poruguese: outono
Spanish: otono*

While in
Dutch: de herfst
German: Herbst
There seems no relationship with Germanic languages.

Then, how and why did people Shakespear's age use "fall" for "autumn"?

*n represents a Spanish letter written as "n with a dash above", pronounced as articulated "ny".
It cannot be typed in this encoding so I use "n" to distinguish it from a normal "n".

I think that "fall" was a simile to the scene that tree leaves are falling in that season, and that was why the season was called "fall"

Personally I has been living in an environment of British English and I think that the differences between, not only the language, but the systems in America and Britain is due to the social level of the residents. The people who moved to America from Britain disliked (is it?) the British styles and built up their own. As you would see, many things in America are reversed / very different from Britain, though the people in America originated from Britain.

(Personal opinion only)
