Taichung's main railway station serves the slower TRA trains, although the journey from Taipei actually isn't that much longer compared to the high-speed train since that station is quite some ways from the city centre. A massive new structure opened in October 2016 as part of a 21km new section of elevated railway in the city.
The original station building dates from the Japanese colonial era. Completed in 1906, the current look reflects the renovations made in 1917. Built with red bricks in the Neo-Renaissance style, it is now part of a park with classic trains on display.
