New high-capacity buses that do not operate to timetables will be trailled in the CBD next year.
Five different "super metro" buses will run along Parramatta Rd at Leichhardt to Anzac Pde, Kingsford, via the new Mid-City Transport Interchange.
"Customers cn expect a bus every five minutes in peak hour, with a bus every 10 minutes during off-peak times." Transport Minister John Watkins said today.
Five buses with a variety of seat arrangements, capacity and environmental features from different manufacturers will be trailled, he said.
The route would be serviced by five European-style buses and existing State Transit vehicles for 12 months.
It will include major stops at Leichhardt, the University of Sydney, Railway Square, Town Hall, Taylor Square, the University of New South Wales and Kingsford.
Tenders have been called for the buses to carry at least 115 people. Bendy buses carry 85 people and regular buses about 60 people.
The "super metro" trail will be pre-paid only and use Euro 5 diesal or Compressed Natural Gas buses with wheelchair access.
The State Government has resisted City of Sydney Council calls for light rail to be extended from inner Sydney to Bondi.
Reviews are under way on reconfiguring the CBD to be more bus friendly.
Some questions:
- What kind of buses will be introduced? Double deck or Single deck? It seems to be double deck because the buses have to carry at least 115 people.
- Which manufacturers will provide the "super metro"buses? As mention, five European-style buses - Dennis, Volvo, Scania, Mercedes Benz, NeoMan?
- Is the Leichhardt to Kingsford route existing or new? and is that means the existing State Transit vehicles will run under the timetable and carry passengers, but the "super metro" will not carry any passenger?
- Is there any manufacturer providing Euro 5 diesal or compressed natural gas buses that meet the criteria set in the tender now? I just know Sydney Buses' Volvo B12B use Euro 5 and Scania has a compressed natural gas bus trailled in London.
At last, it is interesting to see the State Government support more buses operate in CBD and resist the light rail to expand. Totally different to Hong Kong. |
