[US] Las Vegas RTC Wright Streetcar Hybrid

Was surfing in the AUS bus forum and came across this link.

Apparently they have ordered a batch of 50, with options for another 2 batches of 50 each. They are shipped to LA, and then transported to LV.

I always had this question, what is the benefit of a Streetcar? Isn't it just an articulated bus with a strange body design? What benefits do they offer over a traditional artic bus?

This is old news actually. The order was placed early this year. Unlike the diesel powered Streetcars in the UK, these has the Swiss-based HESS underfrome and running units.

On a hindsight, it is just an artic with a fancy bodywork, but the idea of the Streetcar is, with the more style, and more tram-like bodywork (It has a much higher roofline comparing to a standard artic), it can be used, along with some bus-priority measures, as a quick and cheap implementation of mass people transit (e.g. trams). This is something that is being looked at in a few cities in Britain (Swansea for example).

I think RTC always want some WOW factor to match the strip. So it can be the one operator of Civis in America.

The design, both body and engineering, is different from typical Arti bus.
Like Civis, it has a guidance system which help the driver to park at a bus stop. And many designs are used to give a tram-like charater with a more flexible solution.

Those artics came earlier than I thought. Seems Las Vegas maybe be once again become my long weekend getaway this year.

Yep, For southwest region of US, 99% of time BRT (esp. with dedicated right-of-way and off board ticketing) projects are cheap replacement for LRT project. Resistance from communities for rail project in here still substantial, despite of high gas prices.
