I think the PI Designline use the series hybrid technology instead of parallel hybrid. The difference is that parallel hybrid vehicle is still powered mainly by combustion engine, which connects to a generator and a transmission, and the battery pack and the electric motor use to support to the combustion engine by giving additional torque if needed and they are also responsible for the electric appliances, such as air conditioner, in the vehicle.
