You only got two UK-based manufacturer afterall, so unless they come up with additional products on each of the markets, it just won't happen - what they end up doing is developing something that, unnecessarily, compromise the market share of their existing product line.
The Optares, from what I know, are very much on par with their competitors in terms of price. The Versa is fairly successful for a new product, and the Tempo has suffered a lot of Excel-hangover after the poor reputation of its predecessor. The Solo SR was offered as a premium version of the Solo at the outset, and for that reason alone, of course it is more expensive. Bear in mind though, the SR have not replaced the classic Solo, which is still offered and sold as we speak.

They are different class of buses, from the point when Dennis got rid of the Lance SLF and replaced it with very much nothing, it is bounded to happen anyway. The fact is, Volvo, Scania, Mercedes, and even MAN have over 10 years to establish a foothold on this market segment in the UK, and ADL and Optare had a very little opportunity to get themselves back into the market, and only if they have a much better product. The problem is, neither ADL or Optare managed that anyway (or in ADL's case, they couldn't be bothered). With the existing Citaros (a fabulously built and engineered bus), B7RLE (a tough and relentlessly reliable type) and the Scania K/N-series (a cheap and capable type) in place, the Tempo is just not good enough, and the E300 is not even in the same class to talk about. |

Just live with it. We are in a global market. If you have a well designed product and a good price, people will buy it. In any case, I don't think Optare/ADL are building less types anyway - Think about early 90s when you only have, in essence, the Dart and Metrorider offered as the all-British single decker. |
