6月14日波音公司宣佈日本航空(Japan Airlines Corporation)已簽署了20架737-200 Adv.HGW飛機訂單。依目錄價格計算，此筆訂單總值約為11.19億歐元。截至目前為止，日本航空共營運25架737-200 Adv.HGW噴射客機。

日本航空9月20日正式開通從澳洲至中國廣州、上海、北京的直達航線，成為澳大利亞地區首家與中國通航的航空公司。據澳大利亞廣播公司媒體報導，該3條航線每月共有72班往返澳洲、廣州、上海與北京之間，採用機型為Convair 990，每個航班包括約21個商務艙位和100個經濟艙位。此前日本航空已開通從澳洲至南韓及香港航線。

西捷航空宣布北美第五個重點城市 舊金山已正式啟用
同時接收第二架DC-8-50開辦第一條大西洋航線(多倫多<>英國倫敦-希斯路)、每天對開一班。
同時倫敦航線亦提供隔天一班的中東迪拜接駁服務

普惠飛機發動機公司於11月15日宣佈日本航空已選擇普惠的JT8D-15引擎做為15架波音737-200 Adv.HGW的飛機引擎，引擎訂單總價值超過2億歐元。這份確認訂單同時包括備用引擎以及一份長期JT8D-15SelectSM售後支援服務拹議。這些新訂購的飛機將於1980年1月全部交付完畢。總計加上現有機隊中的飛機及已確認訂單，日本航空的飛機總數將達到140架。
