Repulse Bay is a wealthy residential area overlooking a popular beach on the south side of Hong Kong Island. While there aren't that many skyscrapers, this district is only 20 minutes from downtown Hong Kong. This is the difference a set of blocking mountains makes.

1. The newest architectural highlight of this district is this structure - 129 Repulse Bay, which is being converted into service apartments :









5. I find it quite difficult to show the curvatures of this building without the context of its surroundings. Somehow, zooming in doesn't really help at all.













11. Repulse Bay is a very popular beach for both locals and tourists.

This block is one of the most costly block built by Chinachem and they wanted it to become a landmark in Repulse Bay or Hong Kong, like the Burj Al Arab in Dubai. In the past, it was some sort of low rise buildings on a small hill. Chinachem asked Sir Norman Foster to do the conceptual design. He drew the petal of a lily. Then they built this residential block. The existing hill was flattened and the block was built "on bedrock" without any pile. Since the section of the building is "C" shaped, modification applications were applied for site coverage and plot ratio calculations. The curvature of the "petal" also needed to be adjusted a bit to allow a little space for lifts and vertical service ducts. The plan of each floor is different. as the core is located at different part of each floor. In the original construction, eight flats were allocated for each storey. The potential buyer could take down the partition wall between two units for units located in the middle for a bigger unit. The slab between two floors had also allowed space to accommodate staircase for alteration to duplex units. A clubhouse was located at level 4 of the building, with indoor swimming pool (could not remember whether it has warm water supply). Carparks were located at the lowest 3 storeys. The top two floors were duplex units with skylight on roof. Automated cleaning system was installed to do general cleaning. Air conditioning plants were provided by split type units installed in the back elevation (not shown in your pictures) of the building.

However, Ms Kung tended not to sell her properties these years. 129 Repulse Bay Road is no difference. She applied for a change of use to a hotel (I heard in 2003, not sure whether it will become a hotel or a service apartment now) and has carried out alteration and addition works since then.



Look at these fins. They have two purposes:
1. It is a sunshade to reduce solar heat gain from the outside.
2. It is a platform for workers with safety line attached to the external wall for general cleaning and maintenance.

This building should be viewed from the Buddha in Repulse Bay. Your shots are too close.
