This is DW282- a Daf/VDL chassis bus with Wright gemeni2 body, which entered service yesterday.
seen at brixton. notice the weather- typical of the sort of winter we had this year- dull and dismal!

It's a Gemini 2 DL, Yoram is right in a way that the underframe was sourced from VDL, but it is not marketed as a VDL Bus, but a Wrightbus integral.
Hate to say this, but a lot of people don't read these days. |

DW280/2 are still the only ones on the route so far. Route 59 requires 23 buses, but only 18 DWs were ordered for the route.
The oldest batch of DLAs dates back to 2000- and those are DLA2- 64. Those buses are based in TH garage in south London, and at WN, E and EC & Barking - in north London. some buses from this batch serve as trainers, and the buses based at EC & Barking - and most of the ones at WN -are used on school routes.
Route 242 lost it's allocation of DLAs in the 371-385 range. Those buses moved to TH [less 3 buses which were sent to BN garage for the increase on route 59].
The 18DLAs displaced by the new DWs on route 59 would also be sent to TH, displacing older DLAs.
As part of the Croydon tender awards, Arriva would also order about 25 DWs for routes based at TH & TC garages. Those would displace existing DLAs.
Therefore, all old DLAs in south London would be displaced, and any remaining 'newer' DLAs would be sent to north London to replace older DLAs.
Ultimately, some of the older DLAs [2-64] would be sent out of London to serve with other Arriva companies, but this process would take some time, as there is a refurbishment programme for DLAs in London, requiring some cover while buses are sent away for refurbishment.
why does Arriva in London order DWs? Because of the link between Arriva and VDL, which, in partnership with Wright developed the concept of 'Intergral bus'.

Whatever the linkage, are the VDLs good in terms of mechanics and comfort? Thanks |

hard to tell...
there are three operators in London that use them:
Go Ahead- one vehicle at SW garage [normally on route 88]- WDL1- which is not used that frequently
First in London- WM35001-4- those are used on route 23- between 2-3 per weekday
and Arriva in London: 79 DWs [DW201-279] are allocated to CT garage for routes 38 &242
18 DWs - which should be at BN garage and route 59
2 DWs [6000/1] at Arriva in Garston [routes 142/340/258/640]
Apart from 5 buses, all of the batch has only been in service since Nov 2009.
Riding comfort? the seats are fairly hard, and the ride quality is not exceptional- it's OK.
mechanically the buses at Arriva seems to be OK- very much like the previous DLAs, DLPs and DWs they have in large
quantity. The routes they are used on are 'flat landscape' no hills or inclines...
