Earlier this year, Stagecoach Manchester introduced a batch of 20 Enviro 400s to its Manchester fleet. On the face of it, it does not sound all that interesting - Ever since receiving the first of the type in 2006, Stagecoach Manchester have hundreds of Enviro 400s in service already. What makes them different though, is they are fitted a new engine, one that did not come from Cummins that we are accustomed to.



The engine in concern is a Euro-5 MAN D0836 unit. On paper, it has similar size, 6.9L vs 6.7L on the ISB, and at 250bhp, the same rating as well. Unlike the Cummins, the MAN engine uses EGR technology, which does not need AdBlue to achieve the required emission standard, and giving ADL access to a market which has been dominated by the unchallenged, and increasingly popular Scania N230/270UD.



ADL's move is not a surprise - Optare took a similar approach on its Solo by offering a MAN engine for a number of years. In fact, a few years ago, they have evaluated a Catepillar engine, which uses EGR technology as well, on a Transdev London Trident. The fitment of the MAN engine also has a lot to do with Stagecoach's increasing preference on the Scania N230UD as well, which, despite being 20bhp short, is becoming the preferred choice on interurban services on the Stagecoach network.



Numbered 19621-40, all 20 are currently based at Stockport and mostly found on trunk route 192, operating alongside the Cummins ISB and ISC powered sisters for evaluation purpose.

Externally, the MAN-powered E400s are difficult to distinguish from the Cummins-powered one. The obvious hint was the lack of the AdBlue filler cab aft of the offside front wheel. The other difference is a longer rear overhang - Somehow, despite the MAN engine size is very close to the Cummins, a larger engine compartment is need. This make it the 3rd variation - along with the massive engine compartment on the HK E400s - of the type.



Illustrating the difference is 19485, a Cummins-powered E400.



Once on the bus though, the differences between the two engines become more telling. The MAN-powered E400 is so much quieter. Whilst the Cummins E400's turbo whine rather vocally, the MAN-powered E400 sounds a lot more smoothly and quieter, in a way more like a product from continental Europe. Performance wise, it is not much different - off the line it is not quick, just as the Cummins E400. But once it gets up to speed, the MAN-powered E400 pulls along nicely, certainly better than the ISB-engine sisters, and it feels very much like the B7TL in many ways.

It is amazing how much difference the engine change makes. The ISB-powered E400 is a competent bus, but the MAN powered version feels so much more civilised. Ironically, with practically no improvement of power, I can't see Stagecoach would be persuaded away from the Scanias. With so many Cummins-powered example in the fleet as well, I see little motivation for them to switch future E400 orders to fit the MAN engine either. Unless it can notch up some order in London, this breed could well be a rare species of the E400 range.

MAN 偈可以唔用Adblue 符合歐5 廢氣排放標準...唔知會唔會有Man 偈配E500/B9TL 呢??!!

曾經聽聞過ADL真係研究緊E500用MAN偈
字大只顯得人自大

And I doubt the popularity of E500 w/MAN engine due to the experiences of the MAN or Neoplan buses of the HK bus companies...

MAN冇問題, 不知幾多公司用佢, 有問題係Neoplan...
不過價錢可能係一個問題...

That's (probably?) the problem of KMB, consider that NLB and Discovery Bay bought lots of different MANs in the recent years.
Not to mention the flooding of MAN A91 in Euro 4+ HK coach market.

And, the most important is the E400s are using the engine from MAN only, not a complete chassis.
