According to bus fans in UK
The 4 speed semi-automatic when put in 4th would change automatically, but wouldn't start in 1st. It's how they were built.

Select the fourth gear 'gate' to pull away, and a Routemaster will perform as a three speed automatic (i.e. It will take off in second when in auto mode). This was a design feature of the RM.
