Melbourne to Sydney in 3 hours? With a bullet

A high speed rail running at 350km/h between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane is back on the political agenda with the government and opposition supporting a landmark study that calls for action to preserve land corridors to ''future proof'' the economics of the project.
The trip from Melbourne to Sydney would take 3 hours and from Melbourne International Airport to Melbourne CBD would take 5 minutes(!!). At this speed, high-speed rail becomes competitive with air travel.
Possible routes:
Melbourne(Southern Cross)

Melbourne International Airport

Albury-Wodonga

Canberra

Wollongong

Sydney International Airport

Sydney(Central)

New Castle

Brisbane(Roma Street)

This high speed rail will be fatal to the airlines, especially Tiger. Consider the time spent to the airport, check in, on flight and to the city centre, the time spent may not be much different compare with taking a bullet train or more time is spent on plane!
Anyway I am more interested to watch the political drama on this project instead.
Similiar report on the SMH, but it never mentioned that the train will take us to Melbourne or Brisbane...
