E400H and Gemini 2 HEV do not have the same issue - At least for the E400H, I believe the batteries are stored at the back between the lower and upper deck. Volvo went with the in-line design for a very simply reason - to standardise the design with the 7700 hybrid that is offered to continental Europe. Volvo went down that route before with the B7L, but was forced to backtrack because British operators did not like the long overhang. But that latter issue has been conclusively debuked with the emergence of Scania's N94UD in 2003, which sold well despite its fairly long rear overhang as well. Volvo obviously believe that the B5LH's rear overhang shouldn't become an issue, and sales figure seem to have reflected that as well.

But for HK, yes the air-con will pose a technical challenge as it takes up the spaces for where the batteries will go (the powertrain itself is actually about similarly sized to a normal engine). However, I speculate that the very long stairwell specified in KMB vehicles could become a blessing - that should provide ample of space for batteries.

Shouldn't the short wheelbase, and therefore the long rear overhang, be welcomed in the UK?  Operation environments may be crowded, especially in the cities. The bus may then be able to maneuver narrow streets. Are there any disadvantages for a bus to have a long overhang?

Longer rear overhang means extra care to be taken when turning around sharp curves (esp. 90 degree turns) on narrow streets and prevent crashes due to the swinging of the rear overhang.

其實我都諗緊係唔係birmingham,但因為我唔知原來birmingham有volvo dealer,
