Ok, name me a 英國附近的國家 which operates a single B12BLE then. No? Surprise. Volvo never sold one anywhere in Europe, let along a double decker version. Don't tell me Australia have shedloads of those things - Last time I check on the map it is the other side of the world of the UK, not quite 英國附近的國家 then.

Your obsession - yes, there is no other word to put it - of sticking a unnecessarily massive engine on a citybus is even worse than the power-obsessive kids that we regularly observe here. I don't know what the road is like in Australia - maybe you only have Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos on the road to warrant a bus like that just to pull out at bus stops - but in HK you have buses limited to 70-80kph, get stuck in traffic for much of their life, so a big engine is simply a waste. I travel to HK sparsely these days, but even I can tell what the traffic is like on a cross harbour service. A 12L engine just to get a bus out of the tunnel? You are having a laugh.

Oh, and I haven't mentioned the hideously long rear overhang of the B12BLE as well, which 1. limits the low floor area and 2. make it difficult to fit onto roads in HK and Europe.

The reality tells the story - Smaller turbocharged diesel engines are the way forward to deliver a better balance of power and fuel economy. That applies to all major bus manufacturer these day, including Volvo on the B7/B9 range, Scania on the Omnicity/Omnilink range, MAN on its Lion City range and Mercedes on the Citaro range. If you think B7/B9 have a small engine, you shall have a look at MAN, which has a 6.9L engine, and the Citaro, as standard option, makes do with a tiny 6.4L engine. Just talking about Volvo, the magnitude of which the B7RLE outsells the B12BLE, despite the so-called "advantages" you keep trying to sell, speaks for itself.

ATE24 has made some excellent points. In fact, back in those days when the 3BLs and 3Ns had "only" 220bhp, and still claw out the XHT, fully (over)loaded in most cases, day in day out. Why, all of a sudden, we need something with twice the power, costs twice as much on fuel possibly, and not much quicker, to do the same job? I'd rather the operators go with something that uses less fuel, because it means our fares are lower.

I hate to get personal, but this thread had been a rather constructive thread until you turn up. As far as I have observed, you always pop up, post a shedload of crap, and go back into your hideout to watch the drama unfold, instead of making any effort to defend what you said. I have a strong suspicion that you are just a trouble maker rather than a person talking with any kind of sense. And, back to your beloved B12BLE. I am more than willing to bet that Volvo is morely likely to put out a B9RLE as an replacement than a B13RLE. If that happens, I will be the first one to laugh.

The Leyland engine just can't cope with the hot and humid environment in SE Asia. In fairness, that was not what it was designed to do at the outset.

wrightap: The rattling of B7TL depends on a lot of factor - Engine, gearbox and bodywork combination. From my observation, in general B7TLs with a Voith gearbox are bad, but those with a President bodywork are worst. Those with a ZF box tends to fare better, but latter marks (the Mk.4 i.e. those with the new dashboard) seems to rattle badly. Oddly, ZF-equipped B7TL/Presidents are actually rather stable.

As DH12E engine is gonna fade out, I think B13BLE will finally come out...to suit that kind of irrational power-monster...

While D5E and D7E are facing a re-design or replacement (as mentioned in a few earlier issue of BUSES), D9B from Renault may be a good choice to power the heavy duty single decker in UK.

Don't be so sure, with Volvo now offering the B9R now, all bets are one, and I think a B9RLE is more likely than a B13RLE (think the B12B replacement will be called B13R, not B13B. Hence the low entry version should also be B13RLE as well).
